Two decades and seven years ago as I was coming out from my fragile cocoon in Barangay Acao and was about to enter a school life completely different from the barrio, mixed feelings engulfed my naive and innocent mind. Enormous questions started to puzzle me. Will I be able to cope? How is it to blend with other students kay taga uma ako? Will my mother sustain my educational needs because father is still in stockade? How would I be able to manage my high school education? Big Deal! Luckily Lola Vita was there 24 hours a day and all the time for us but Lola wasn't earning a penny regularly. Well she said always "Ang Diyos may kalooy gid" and I believed her.

To shorten the story I enrolled as freshman and grabbed a place in Section I class. Thereafter Sir Maroma posted the Miravite Scholarship Grant and chaired the selection and interview process. I did not waste any opportunity and told myself that if becoming a Miravite Scholar is the chance and option to help ease my mother's financial burden. By God's will I got the number 1 slot and Lola Vita was the first person I told about it. She said to me "paryente ta ran sanda" and I remembered clearly the name Insong Miravite she uttered. She boasted to me the number of siblings and that they were professionals, high profiled and even the word America wherein some of the siblings were based.

From that thought , an inspiration clicked on, kept me focused against all odds. I maintained my Miravite scholarship and graduated in 1987. But the 4-year educational grant was not the only thing that the Miravite brothers and sisters and my Lola Vita had imparted on me, it is the legacy of helping others and the gesture of sharing what I have are the best things I emulated from them.

To the late Naty Miravite Paraiso and to her bereaved family...my unending thank you.

Miravite Scholar, Cabatuan National Comprehensive High School
Class 1987 2nd Honorable Mention

Dear Miravite Family,
I attended Cabatuan National Comprehensive High School from 1976 through 1980. From sophomore to senior year, I was one of the recipients of the Miravite Scholarship Foundation. Your willingness to maintain strong ties to CNCHS is an inspiration, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Miravite family for their generosity in funding this scholarship for many years, and for helping local students afford high school.

This scholarship helped lightened the financial burden our family was facing in those years and allowed me to focus more on the most important aspect of school, Learning. It motivated me to work hard, appreciated and realized the value of education. Your scholarship served as an exciting challenge for me to maintain and improve my level of achievement beyond high school years.

Our family moved to Oregon in 1983. Currently, I work as controller/accounting manager for one of the largest wireless communication equipment dealers and service centers in the U.S. The company is headquartered in Milwaukie, Oregon with strong presence in all western states.

From the Muyuela Family in Portland, Oregon, we sincerely express our deepest sympathy to the Miravite family for the loss of Naty Miravite-Paraiso, one of the founders of Miravite Scholarship Foundation. Your generosity has inspired our family to also help others and give back to the community.

Once again, I want to thank you for making this scholarship possible and for your generosity toward CNCHS. I hope one day I will be able to help other young students achieved their goals just as your family has helped me.

To: The Miravite Family
My family and I are sending my deepest sympathy and prayers to the entire Miravite Clan as your family go through this sorrowful moment of your life. My name is Genefe Laguna and I am a Cabatuananon who started my humble beginnings of Elementary and Secondary education in Cabatuan. As an alumna of Cabatuan National Comprehensive High School, class of 1988, I was proud and honored to be named as one of the Miravite Scholars during my 4 years of High School.

The Miravite Scholarship played a vital role in our quest for higher grades and to excel in both academics and extra curricular activities in order to qualify for the Scholarship every year. It was indeed a great incentive and motivation to strive for excellence and be on the top 10 of the class and be named a Miravite Scholar every year. Our young and humble hearts always look forward at the end of the year to see our names printed in the school paper, THE GLOW and receive an award during recognition days. That award meant a great deal of honor to us as young aspiring students growing up in a small quite town.

Now, that I had vast experiences in life and God had allowed me to expand my career in this land of opportunity, I always cherish the simple yet valuable achievement I had, coming from a small town that helped me be equipped with knowledge and strong foundation in life and made me who I am now. The insatiable quest for a better education, more knowledge and a better life in order to help our families be freed from poverty were mostly attributed to the very foundation of our life’s inspiration.

As such, when I received this message today from Ronnie..I don’t want to pass this privilege and opportunity to write a quick note to express my gratitude and gratefulness to be part of a Miravite Scholarship foundation that served as one of my Inspirations....with great sense of humility..I am now enjoying my life in Florida and married to Arnold Hutchinson and blessed with 3 boys, Tommy, Travis and Trent.

From the bottom of my heart..Thank you to you all, Miravite Family for sharing your kindness thru a good cause..THE MIRAVITE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM.

In closing....my family and I are sending our CONDOLENCES.
Sincerely,
Genefe Laguna Hutchinson

IT IS WITH GREAT SADNESS FOR ME TO RECEIVE THE NEWS ABOUT THE PASSING AWAY OF NANG NATY MIRAVITE.WAY BACK IN 1974, I WAS STUDYING AS A SECOND YEAR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT OF THE CABATUAN NATIONAL COMPREHENSIVE HIGH SCHOOL. THAT YEAR THE MIRAVITE SCHOLARSHIP WAS OFFERED AND I APPLIED TO AVAIL OF IT, MY PARENTS BEING IN GREAT FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES BECAUSE OF THE HUGE AMOUNT OF MONEY THEY ARE SPENDING FOR THE COLLEGE EDUCATION OF MY OLDER BROTHERS. WE WERE GIVEN THE SCHOLARSHIP EXAMINATION AND I TOPPED IT AND I WAS GIVEN THE SCHOLARSHIP. I WAS VERY LUCKY TO AVAIL OF THE MIRAVITE SCHOLARSHIP UNTIL I GRADUATED IN CNCHS IN MARCH,1977.

IN ADDITION TO THE SCHOLARSHIP, I ALSO RECEIVED THE MIRAVITE SPECIAL AWARD ON EXCELLENCE IN HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISM WITH A CASH GIFT DURING THE GRADUATION CEREMONIES, WHERE I GRADUATED AS SALUTATORIAN OF OUR CLASS 1977. AFTER GRADUATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL I ENDED UP STUDYING ACCOUNTANCY IN MANILA FOR A YEAR AND THEN ENTERED THE ST. VINCENT SEMINARY IN JARO, ILOILO CITY TO BEGIN MY JOURNEY OF BECOMING A CATHOLIC PRIEST. WITH MANY MORE YEARS OF STUDIES AT THE DIVINE WORD SEMINARY, TAGAYTAY CITY, I FINALLY GOT ORDAINED AS A FILIPINO MISSIONARY PRIEST LAST SEPTEMBER 7,1990 AT THE SHRINE OF MARY, QUEEN OF PEACE IN EDSA, MANDALUYONG CITY, PHILIPPINES.

I WORKED AS A MISSIONARY TO PAPUA NEW GUINEA, SOLOMON ISLANDS AND IN DIFFERENT ASSIGNMENTS IN THE PHILIPPINES. AT ONE TIME, IN 1994-1995 I WAS ELECTED TO THE GENERAL COUNCIL OF THE MISSION SOCIETY OF THE PHILIPPINES AND ASSUMED THE OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY GENERAL. ALSO, IN 1997-1999 WAS ABLE TO SPEND TWO YEARS IN ITALY FOR AN UPDATING COURSE ON SPIRITUALITY AT THE SPIRITUAL CENTER OF THE FOCOLARE MOVEMENT IN LOPPIANO, A CITY NEAR FLORENCE.

COMING BACK TO THE PHILIPPINES I GOT ASSIGNED TO THE FILIPINO MISSION SEMINARY IN TAGAYTAY CITY AS A SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR AND IN MSP RETREAT HOUSE IN TAYUD, CONSOLACION, CEBU AS A RETREAT DIRECTOR. I MIGRATED TO THE UNITED STATES IN DECEMBER, 2004 AND JOINED THE PECOS BENEDICTINE MONASTERY, PECOS, NEW MEXICO FROM 2005-2007. iN THE SUMMER SCHOOL FOR SPIRITUAL DIRECTION OFFERED BY THE MONASTERY IN JULY,2007 I GOT ASSIGNED BY THE ABBOT AS THE DIRECTOR OF THE SCHOOL. IN DECEMBER,2007 I DECIDED TO GET MARRIED TO MARILENE LUSAYA, A FORMER SCHOOLMATE IN CNCHS AND A WIDOW TO HER FIRST HUSBAND, THE LATE EDGAR REGIDOR TORRE.

PRESENTLY I NOW WORK AND LIVE IN MCCLOUD, CALIFORNIA. LAST SEPTEMBER 27,2008 I GOT ACCEPTED AS A MEMBER OF THE ST. BARNABAS EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN MT. SHASTA, CALIFORNIA. RIGHT NOW, I AM APPLYING TO GO BACK TO ACTIVE MINISTRY AND WORK IN THE EPISCOPAL DIOCESE OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AS A MARRIED EPISCOPAL PRIEST.

LOOKING BACK TO ALL THE EVENTS THAT HAPPENED IN MY LIFE, I CAN HONESTLY SAY THAT MY BECOMING A MIRAVITE SCHOLAR WAS ONE OF MY BEST INCENTIVES FOR ME TO AIM FOR EXCELLENCE AND BECOME SUCCESSFUL IN WHATEVER FIELD OF HUMAN ENDEAVOR GOD HAS DESTINED ME TO BE. THE MIRAVITE SCHOLARSHIP WAS THE VERY FIRST OF THE SERIES OF SCHOLARSHIPS THAT I GARNERED DURING MY COLLEGE AND SEMINARY STUDIES UNTIL I FINALLY FINISHED SCHOOLING AND GOT ORDAINED TO THE CATHOLIC PRIESTHOOD IN 1990.

I WILL BE FOREVER GRATEFUL TO THE MIRAVITE FAMILY FOR THE GREAT CHARITABLE WORK THEY HAVE STARTED DOING AND STILL DO FOR THE ECONOMICALLY LESS FORTUNATE YET PROMISING STUDENTS OF THE CABATUAN NATIONAL COMPREHENSIVE HIGH SCHOOL. MAY GOD REWARD NANG NATY WITH PEACE AND JOY OF HER SOUL IN HEAVEN AND MAY HE BLESS THE MIRAVITE FAMILY FOR THE OUTSTANDING PHILANTHROPIC WORK THEY DO.
Sincerely in the Service of Christ and His Church,
BENITO "BOBBY" PARIAN SAGRA
(Miravite Scholar, Cabatuan National Comprehensive High School

The Miravite scholarship was a magnanimous gesture to help the less fortunate but deserving students to at least finish secondary education and had the chance to earn a college degree. I know I am just one of the hundreds grantees who benefited from your benevolent and altruistic acts. Yes, the Miravite Scholarship played a very important and significant role in my life for what I am now in my professional career. I am fully convinced that being materially poor is not an absolute hindrance to success. With hardwork, patience, perseverance and faith in God, everything is possible. There are so many people out there who are more than willing to share their blessings , to do a Samaritan act , and the Miravite clan is one among those. With my family, I want to express our most sincerest gratitude. We may not be able to personally meet the Miravite clan and say THANK YOU, THANK YOU AND THANK YOU. But to pray that our good Lord repay you a thousand fold in riches and health.
Gratefully yours,
Eng’r. Eugenio (Eugene) B. Bolaños, Jr., PME

Herewith are the details of my success story.

MY CHILDHOOD BACKGROUND
My full name is Eugenio (Eugene) Barbosa Bolaños, Jr. born on November 15, 1959. I am the 5th child among the six children of the late Eugenio Vallejo Bolaños, Sr. and Salvacion Yniego Barbosa. We were then living In Bgy. Amurao which is around 3 km from the town proper.

Since our childhood, our parents instilled in our minds and soul the value of hard work ,that we have to strive for a living. Even at our younger age we learned how to till the soil and waive handicraft out of bamboo trees. Year 1972, my father died due to possible cardiac arrest. Because of his untimely demise, I was not able to proceed to secondary education. I was out of school youth for three years. During that span of three years , at my early age I helped my older brother attending our farm for our existence. Life was so hard for me- it was very demanding, we have to sweat to eat. Young as I was, I learned and knew a lot of works just to earn for a living in the countryside. I have to wake up as early as 4:30 in the morning to pasture our carabao. There were times that I seemed don’t want to wake up especially during cold and rainy days. What I did was to wear a plastic (kapote) taken from empty fertilizer bag and put on a waived hat(salakot) over my head for protection. Sometimes I used to lie atop the carabao and have a sleep for its heat let me felt better against the cold of the morning. Because of my style, once, our carabao moved its head sideways to let the flies get away and its long horn accidentally hit my right eyebrow that left a scar until today.

In the area of farming from the field preparation such as to plowing, harrowing, sowing seeds nor planting seedlings, pulling weeds, spraying the herbicides and insecticides, to harvesting using the sickles of scythe to winnowing, I learned to master them all.To augment our income , we cut our bamboo trees , make them as raft(balsa) and transport these to other towns through the Tigum river, one raft consists of around 30 to 45 length. Sometimes we cut trees and sold them as panggatong.

MY EDUCATION
I took my elementary education at APIA Elementary school from 1966-72 (without honor), situated in the boundary of Bgy Amurao and Amerang . Then I stopped for 3 years due to the untimely demise of our father. After three (3) yeard of being out of school, I came to the realization that if I’ll remain just in the farm , what would my future be, just tilling the soil, not able to finish a degree. I started to save an amount and enrolled at Cabatuan National Comprehensive High School in the year 1976. I took an entrance examination (which I found hard being out of school for 3 years), and luckily landed in section II. Even when I was already studying in high schOol, I did the same routine works I used to do pasturing our carabao early In the morning and late in the afternoon after class until around 9:00PM. After which, I took my dinner and started to study my lessons. I used to sleep at 12:00 midnight and sometimes 1:00AM using the kerosenE lamp just to cope up with my subjects. To keep me awake up to that time , I boiled banana to eat. Every morning I have to leave our house at around 6:45AM and walk(since no money for fare) for almost 45 minutes to reach CNCHS and same in the afternoon… for four years. I just brought rice (kanin) for my lunch wrapped in the banana leaf and more often with a piece of dried fish as my viand.Sometimes when we have an exam for the following day/s, in the afternoon upon reaching home from school while pasturing our carabao I studied my lessons atop its back and early in the morning while walking towards school over the rice paddy, I was still memoriziNg my lessons. All my efforts were rewarded, I was promoted to section I in my second year and was able to avail the "MIRAVITE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP". This encouraged me to study harder. From 2nd year to 4th year I enjoyed that scholarship and was able to maintain my standing to be among the top five of the entire class. I graduated In 1979 as 1st Honorable mention . I was so thankful for the Miravite scholarship , without it maybe I was not able to finish my secondary education.

As the high school graduation was fast approaching, I was pondering how to proceed to college considering that my family had no financial capacity. So every opportunity I grasped, I took a lot of scholarship examinations; the NSDB, UPCAT, Insular Insurance Scholarship and many others. I also applied for Study Now Pay Later Plan and was qualified and got rank 3 priority. I also took the National State Scholarship examination which luckily I made this one. I was so delighted because I had my monthly allowance, books allowance and free tuition.I enrolled at Central Philippine University taking up BS Mechanical Engineering and graduated in 1984.

After graduation I went to Manila to take the Board Exam but due to lack of necessary papers I was not able to take the exam. There in Manila I worked as missionary volunteer under Philippine Campus Crusade for Christ (PCCC), an international interdenominational Christian organization committed to spread the gospel of salvation to all people for almost 4 years. My work was so fulfilling seeing people coming to the Lord crying and asking Christ to be their Lord and Savior. In 1988 I passes the Mechanical Engineering Licensure Examination with a very good rating, and in 1999 I took the Professional Mechanical Licensure Examination and was able to make it.

EMPLOYMENT
Early part of 1988 I worked at United Container Corporation at Quality Controller. However it lasted for only 3 months considering that I found some practices in its business operation which are against my conviction so I tendered my resignation believing that God would give me one related to my course before year 1988 ends. In December 15, 1988 I was hired at Training Staff of Lopez Sugar Corporation, a sugar manufacturing company located at Bgy Paraiso, Sagay , Negros Occidental.

After two years I was promoted as supervisor of Inventory Planning and Control Office. I held that position for almost 6 years. Then I was promoted as shift Supervisor of Sugar and Molasses Storage Dept.. Less that a year later, I was promoted as Head, of Inventory Control Office. And for almost 12 years already I am designated as Head, Purchasing department. One of the highly sensitive positions in the organization. But thank God, my humble beginnings taught me the virtue of life, honesty and integrity.

I am married to former Josephine Cañete Sulangob. A commerce graduate of University of San Agustin Iloilo City. We are blessed with three children. Gezzah Mae (18 year old now), a 2nd year college student at UP Miag-ao taking up BS Applied Mathematics, Jezreel(boy)- 3rd year high school at Sagay Special Science Class and Mizpah(girl)- a grade 3 pupil at Holy Family School (HFS- a La Salle Supervised School).

"Live your dreams and reach for the sky,Believe in yourself and never ask why."These beautiful lines are from Inday Naty as we fondly call her, taken from the article"My Quest for the American Dreams" which she wrote in the souvenir program during the General Reunion of the Miravite clan in 1996 at the Nayong Pilipino,Manila. Indeed, Inday Naty was a dreamer and achiever inspiring not only her family but people who come in contact with her.She was my inspiration to pursue my college course in education after World WarII. Both of us were employed at the Provincial Post Office and after office hour we took night classes at San Agustin University until we graduated.

Inday Naty is an epitome of a ardworking, caring, loving, generous and compassionate person who always shared her bounty with the less fortunate people. She was one of the founder members of the Miravite Foundation that provided scholarships to the poor and deserving students of Cabatuan National High School and later they extended their scholarships to the graduates of Acao National High School, a barangay which is the birthplace of their mother. Way back in 1999 Dra. Estelita Miravite Christobal her younger sister gifted my sister and me a free round trip ticket for a vacation in San Francisco.Whenever we went shopping, we noted that she did not buy things for herself but she would purchase articles which would be sent to the poor students in our town. How kind, hearted indeed is Inday Naty. The legacy she has left behind-an ideal mother, sister,a great teacher will always be treasured by us.Farewell, and may the good Lord reward you in his kingdom for all the good things
