Lady Fencers shine in pre-season

The Ateneo Lady Fencers wrapped up winning campaigns in two pre-season tourneys last September in preparation for their UAAP Season 70 title defense.

They finished their third foray into the Interclub Fencing Championships last September 28 in second place, bowing to University of the East in the final.

The Lady Fencers’ contingent of VG Garcia (IV BS HSc), Faye Garcia (II BS Psy), Strella Marie Sacdalan (III BS LM), Czarina Frez (IV AB SoS), Stephanie Payoyo (III AB Comm), and Michaela Reyes (II BS Psy) had topped the elimination round on September 22, beating Far Eastern University and the University of Santo Tomas.

The Lady Fencers also returned bemedalled from the 2007 ASEAN Varsity Fencing invitational competition held on September 1 and 2 in Singapore.

Coming away with the gold in the team foil category were the Garcias, Sacdalan, and Maria Cristina Samaco (MA Psy).

Joanna Ang (IV BS CTM), Danica Dacay (III BS CTM), Reyes, and Payoyo bagged more gold medals in the team epee category, while Samaco, the Garcias, and Frez garnered the bronze.

Reyes and Faye Garcia also won silver medals in the individual epee and foil events, respectively.

As both competitions allowed the Lady Fencers to square off with UAAP rivals and players of national team caliber, captain VG Garcia considered the warm-ups vital.

“This UAAP will be tougher than last year,” she said. “Our primary rival is UE and there will be more national team members in their team this year than last year.”

“But we still have a fighting chance,” she said.
